Where Words Are Treated With the Utmost Care
Policy on Professional Practices
Syllables subscribes to the intent of the Code
of Ethics and Professional Conduct published by the International Council
of Graphic Design Associations and the American Institute of Graphic Arts.
Professional Responsibility
We shall not undertake, within the context of
our professional practice, any activity that will compromise our status
as professional graphics and typesetting consultants.
Responsibility to Clients
We will acquaint ourselves with a client's business
and design standards/objectives and will act in the client's best interests
within the limits of professional responsibility.
We will not work simultaneously on assignments
which create a conflict of interest without the prior agreement of the
clients involved.
We will treat all work in progress prior to
the completion of a project and all knowledge of a client's intentions,
production methods, and business organization as confidential and will
not divulge such information in any manner whatsoever without the consent
of the client.
Responsibility to Other Designers
We believe that the graphics professional in pursuit
of business opportunities should support fair and open competition based
upon professional merit. We will not knowingly accept any professional
assignment on which another designer has been or is working without notifying
the other designer or until he or she is satisfied that any previous appointments
have been properly terminated and that all materials relevant to the continuation
of the project are the clear property of the client.
We will not attempt, directly or indirectly,
to supplant another designer through unfair means nor will we compete with
another designer by means of unethical inducements. We will never denigrate
the work or reputation of a fellow professional.
We will not accept or otherwise act on instructions
from a client which involve infringement of another person's property rights
or consciously act in any manner involving such infringement.
We will not usurp form or function of any Web site we are asked to redesign; we will always keep those responsible for the administrative details of the Web site/hosting fully informed of all changes requested by the client.
Fees
We will not undertake any work for a client without
adequate compensation except with respect to work for charitable or not-for-profit
organizations. Neither will we undertake any speculative projects either
alone or in competition with other designers for which compensation will
be received only if a design is accepted or used. This applies not only
to entire projects but also to preliminary proposals. We will, however,
submit works for consideration to recognized competitions in the graphics
field.
We will work only for a fee, a royalty, salary,
or other agreed-upon form of compensation. We will not retain any kickbacks,
hidden discounts, commission, allowances or payment in kind from contractors
or suppliers. We will never base advice on the selection of designers or
other consultants on the receipt of payment from the designers or consultants
recommended.
Authorship
We will never claim sole credit for a work on
which other designers have collaborated.
Transfer of Rights to Client
Upon completion of work and satisfactory payment
or payment arrangements, we will transfer to our client full rights to
works created by us unless other restrictive arrangements have been agreed
to in advance of or during the performance of work. In no case, however,
are intermediate sketches, computer files, computer programs or other by-products
of the design effort to be considered as deliverables unless specific agreement
is made in advance to the contrary.
